    Hi,

     

    First of all congrats on the new release. The 3D stuff looks very interesting.

     

    I’d love to hear some thoughts from the V-Play team on the new Qt pricing.

     

    The removal of the indie developer license means even the cheapest commercial license is prohibitively expensive for many (I guess).

     

    The reason I ask is that I’ve been working on apps in my free time for quite some time. I was planning to buy the Qt indie license as I get closer to completion and now there’s been a massive increase in price. My initial thought is that I’ll have to move to another, more affordable framework.

     

    Is it possible to release commercial V-Play apps under the LGPL license? I’m sure you guys understand the licensing better than I do. It would be great if you could provide a break-down of how the various Qt licenses relate to V-Play customers.

    thanks for the kudos! We’re looking forward to some cool 3D games in the future from the V-Play community. :)

    Please have a look at our Pricing FAQ, which explains “When do I need a Qt Commerial license“.

    TLDR: You can use the open-source Qt license as long as you provide the obj code upon request. To protect your QML code, use the V-Play Publishing Solution using QRC (which also works for apps, not only games!).

    Thanks for your reply Chris,

     

    Not sure how I missed your FAQ! It does need updating though as it mentions the old Qt licenses.

     

    I’m not a developer so am not used to the language used in the licensing. Isn’t the V-Play engine statically linked in our apps? We can’t provide your source code.

     

    Thanks again, I had a slight panic about allĀ  this but feel better now!

    You’re right Alec, the V-Play engine is statically linked. But the Qt libraries are unmodified and linked dynamically on all platforms except iOS. Thus to adhere with LGPL on iOS, we recommend to provide the object code of your application upon request. This allows other developers to fulfill the LGPL requirements: to change the Qt libraries.
